A Tranquil Oasis in Marrakesh, Morocco: Riad Azzouna 13

Suite Mannjeh Jouj

During my recent trip to Morocco, I had the pleasure of staying at Riad Azzouna 13 in Marrakesh. For those unfamiliar with the term, a "riad" is a traditional Moroccan house or palace with an interior garden or courtyard. This type of accommodation is a must-try experience for any tourist visiting Morocco, offering a unique blend of cultural immersion, comfort, and privacy.

First Impressions and Finding the Riad

Riad Azzouna 13 is nestled in the bustling Medina, just 328 feet from the souks and Jammâ el Fna Square. However, like many riads, it is hidden away from the main streets. I must admit, I got a bit lost trying to find the entrance. The door has no logo, which is excellent for safety and privacy but can be quite a challenge for first-time visitors. Despite the initial difficulty, once I stepped inside, I was immediately stunned by the beauty of the place.

Upon arrival, I was warmly greeted with traditional Moroccan tea and biscuits, a welcoming gesture that set the tone for my stay. This small but significant touch made me feel instantly at home and immersed in the local culture.

The Ambiance and Interior Design

The riad features a rooftop terrace with views of the Medina and a charming courtyard that serves as the heart of the property. The rooms at Riad Azzouna 13 combine contemporary and Moroccan styles, and each one is air-conditioned with a private bathroom. Some rooms also feature a seating area, adding to the comfort. The interior design is truly Instagram-worthy, with beautiful Moroccan decor and an amazing scent that permeates the entire guest house.

Dining and Amenities

Every morning, a continental breakfast is provided, which can be enjoyed on the terrace, in the dining room, or in the comfort of your room.

The on-site restaurant offers a delightful selection of Moroccan dishes. For those seeking relaxation, the riad features a hammam and spa therapy.

The property is well-equipped with Wi-Fi throughout, a 24-hour reception, and offers information about the local area.

The Riad is conveniently located within walking distance to several attractions, including the Cyber Park, Palacio da Bahia, and Maison de la Photographie. Additionally, free public parking is available, making it easy for those who rent a car to explore the city.

The Location: A Double-Edged Sword

One thing to note is that it’s quite a walk to get to the riad. While it seems to be in the Medina, which is the historic district and a major cultural and commercial hub, it’s actually further from the central market area. The Medina is a labyrinth of narrow streets and bustling souks, full of life and energy. However, Riad Azzouna 13 is about a 10-minute walk from the most vibrant part of the Medina. This distance can be exhausting, especially after a long day of exploring. On the positive side, this location offers a peaceful and quiet retreat away from the hustle and bustle.

The Ups and Downs

Overall, I enjoyed my stay at Riad Azzouna 13. It’s a beautiful riad that provides a peaceful retreat from the vibrant streets of Marrakesh. However, there were some minor details that did not quite meet the four-star standard or the price paid. I noticed a few dirty carpets, worn-out furniture (which could add to the rustic feel, but still), and stains on the bathrobe. These small issues slightly lowered my overall satisfaction, as my expectations were a bit higher.

Despite these minor flaws, the charm and beauty of Riad Azzouna 13, along with its prime location and serene ambiance, made my stay memorable. If you’re looking for an authentic Moroccan experience with a touch of luxury, this riad is definitely worth considering. Just be prepared for a little adventure finding it and a bit of a walk to get to the heart of the Medina.

In conclusion, Riad Azzouna 13 is a hidden gem in the heart of Marrakesh that offers a unique and culturally rich experience. While there are some areas for improvement, the overall charm and beauty of the riad make it a delightful place to stay.
